Stamps

Brief

The company Baxter and Bailey have created this brief and asked us to design a set of 4-8 stamps and two hand stamps, good enough to use by The Royal Mail. We have also been given a random theme as inspiration for the stamps.

My theme is - British Animation

Baxter and Bailey

A creative agency which have worked with a variety of different people and companies to create online branding and products. They have worked with Royal Mail to design stamp sets for The Rolling Stones, Queen and many more.

British Animation

After I recieved my theme of british animation I started researching and making a mood board for ideas for my stamps. I found that the most recognisable parts of british animation is childrens animated movies or television shows. I can create a set that brings nostalga to the audience and for customers who have not seen the show, information will be in the presentation pack.

Idea One - Charlie and Lola

Picture

Charlie and Lola is a TV show about seven year old Charlie and four year old Lola dealing with everyday things kids their age would encounter. It was first created as a novel series by Lauren Child, then later made into a television series for CBeebies in 2005.

Idea Two - Mackinnon and Saunders

Mackinnon and Saunders are a British company in which design and create puppets for animations such as classics like Postman Pat and Bob the Builder. They have also made puppets for movies such as Fantastic Mr Fox and Corpse Bride

To create the books and show Lauren Child uses found and digital imagery for a collage effect, for my stamps I will be using these materials and drawing some aspects myself such as the characters and butterflies.

Presentation Pack and Stamps

Picture
This presentation pack is inspired by the front of Charlie and Lolas apartment. Each stamp would be a window with different characters featured on them.

This presentation pack is inspired by a page in a Charlie and Lola book in which Lola collects objects like stamps.

This presentation pack was inspired by the introduction to a series 2 episode of Charlie and Lola. I had found it whilst watching episodes for ideas for my stamps.

This presentation pack is inspired by pages in a book with Lola and elephants. The stamps would be all over using the materials for the elephants as the backgrounds. It would be designed like a sticker book.

Last idea development
Picture
For my final design I decided to use my third idea of the pink sky and flower hill. This is because I feel like its simple enough for a background yet represents Lauren Childs use of found imagery and sketchy designs with the flowers.

These are the original images I used for the stamps. I used photoshop to remove backgrounds, isolate characters and change facial expressions. I also chose to do square stamps as it suits the style and allows for more room for the designs.
This is one of the first versions before I changed the 7th stamp and arranged them differently

Different colour variations

The grey shadows are to show where the stamps are as they would blend in with the background then come off like a sticker sheet.

This particular stamp features Soren Lorenson which is Lolas imaginary friend. At first glance Lola would look like she's alone drinking pink milk and another glass on the table, however, using a special type of ink when printing upon looking closer you can see Soren sitting with Lola. It could also be embedded into the paper.
It would look something this this page from Charlie and Lola 'I am too absolutely small for school' -

The information in the presentation pack includes the origins of the show, how it was created and some information about its creator Lauren Child. This is to give stamp collectors who do not know about the show a description for the collection. It will also provide nostalgia for anyone who recognises Charlie and Lola.

Around the hand stamps I have included ‘First Day of Issue’ and ‘Royal Mail’ to reference back to the brief as these stamps are for Royal Mail. The date 7.11.2005 is the day the first episode of Charlie and Lola aired in the UK. Lauren Child is from Berkshire, which is why this is the location on the hand stamps.

Presentation to Baxter and Bailey

On the 9th of May 2024 we had a feedback session with Matt Baxter from Baxter and Bailey. In groups we presented the outcomes of this project which were met with feedback from Matt and our tutors. Matt stated I had a good understanding of the project and my stamps were thought out and meet the aspects of the brief. He also said if I was to develop this design further, to reference the book origin of Charlie and Lola - a miniature presentation pack with bookshelf design. Overall, I am very proud of this project and the stamp designs I produced according to the set brief.
