On the 21st November, we were given a choice of four briefs provided by the company Hotfoot. I chose the first brief to create a name, logo, packaging and advertising for dessert hot sauces.
Visual Research
Typical hot sauce brands have imagery of fire and colours like red, orange, green and black. Whereas dessert sauces, such as for ice cream, have a brighter colour palette.
Hotfoot is a multi award winning design company based in Lancaster which helps clients find their visual identity. They provide logos, web design and marketing campaigns. As Hotfoot set this brief I wanted to have a look at how they have approached similar briefs and their outcomes.
For the mascot of Dulcifer I originally wanted it to be a devil, however usually a devil is very common for these brands so I wanted something different. I then chose to design a cat an incorporate devil imagery such as the horns or tail, but I wanted a mascot like one from the 50s. Then I had the idea to make a fire guy holding a pitchfork, this was perfect for my idea because it has the right relation to Lucifer and the brands name, with it being cute enough for people not to mistake it as a really spicy sauce.

Label Development
Using Indesign I changed Dulcifer into many different fonts to find the one that will go with the brand. Eventually I came across Potta One, this is the font I chose because to me it looks like little horns coming from the letters and it will go well with my ideas for more designs.
For the label I designed a barcode that looks like a chilli pepper in illustrator. I experimented with Illustrators AI generative fill tool on the base of the pepper to add the lines so I would not have to do them individually.
After a feedback session, the type element so far of this project has not given the retro 50s vibe I was originally aiming for. Therefore I went back to my research to come up with a new idea.
With my new main Dulcifer font I preferred my newer designs as they are more inspired by retro mascots and type. I tried to include the checkered pattern usually seen in old diners however this made the sauce seem like it was for savoury food rather than sweet.
I also went back to illustrator and made some sparkles inspired by 50s logos for the label.
Bottle Shape
As for the shape, I have looked into many types of hot sauce bottles as well as dessert bottles. Originally, I wanted to have something unique to make it more clear it is a dessert hot sauce, however since I am doing a style reminiscent of the 50s I have chosen to go for the 'basic' bottle shape as this was the most common bottle to use.

'Hide and Seek' with Dulcifer
For the campaign, images of Dulcifer, accompanied by this QR Code, would be all over in different places. The instagram page will also encourage people to find them and scan the code for a chance to win a free set of dessert hot sauces.
